Engineering Manager

Electricity distribution

Sometimes a job comes along that feels tailor made for you…if you’re a qualified engineer with asset management and electricity industry experience and you’re interested in a role with a business that is big enough to have exciting asset projects on the go, yet small enough that you won’t get lost in the crowd and can be responsible for engineering across an entire distribution network, then this could be the role you’ve been looking for.

Waipa Networks owns and operates the electricity network that delivers power to Cambridge, Te Awamutu and the surrounding Waipa region.  Nestled around the south-western edge of Hamilton, this is a region enjoying strong growth from both domestic and industrial clients meaning there is lots to do to ensure we invest in the right capital assets (including building new 33kV sub-transmission circuits and several zone substations by 2025) and the balance of our network remains fit for purpose.

Our network engineering team are custodians of our asset information and geo spatial systems and we’re currently on a technological journey that means your work will be part of a business transformation as we move to the latest in easy access, accurate digital solutions, including an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS).

As you can imagine, there’s lots to be done...

Our engineering manager leads a team of nine which includes engineers and network information specialists.  Key responsibilities include long-term network planning and forecasting, technical oversight of network improvement work and design standards, and leadership of a team of enthusiastic and responsive engineers passionate about getting it right for the region.

Key things ‘on the table’ for focus at the moment include completion of the long-term network and GXP capacity planning reports and load forecasts to input into the AMP, along with the continuous improvement of our construction and design manual, and a Safety by Design process to help drive our focus on continuous safety improvement.

Along with this you’ll be supporting the Asset Strategy Manager both personally and through the provision of engineering resources to produce a 10-year capital budget designed to ensure our network remains fit for purpose and fully optimised.  Like we said, there’s lots going on and this is the ideal role for an engineering professional ready to take a higher profile leadership position within a business.

Working with Transpower, EEA and other industry groups is part of the territory for this role along with regional and district councils, landowners and, of course, our connected customers.

To get to the start line for this role we’re looking for a professional engineer with a minimum of 10 years electricity distribution experience along with proven leadership experience in New Zealand.  Our team is, as you would expect, multi-national and your ability to connect with a diverse team along with our customers and business networks is essential.

Waipa Networks places the health and safety of its team and the public above everything else, so your focus on not only the safety of your team but the safety implications of your work and plans is paramount.

You’ll be one of those people who others naturally turn to, not only because you’re smart, know your stuff and make sound commercial decisions, but also because you’re engaging, motivating and have a high attention to detail in equal parts.

Needless to say you’ll be technically proficient with a career on an upwards trajectory and looking for an opportunity to grow.  Your IT skills will be worthy of the 21st century and you’ll be able to help guide our current technology transformation for your team.

So, whether you’re actively looking or just ‘taking a scan’ and this role has caught your eye, we’re keen to hear from you.  Our recruitment partners are back on deck from 10th January and are keen to catch up with you early in the new year if this job is ‘speaking to you.’

Log your interest by applying today, we look forward to hearing from you.
